Before this session and the discussion on this reading, I was not familiar with the idea of corpora at all. I had to admit that originally I thought the study of corpora must be restricted in some quantitative research about words. But my previous assumptions about corpora were not correct.
By setting different criteria for data collection and collecting different source data, corpora can be useful to reveal the nature of translation, especially the language characters embedded in translation. In the research of translation, I think this is of crucial value. As what we can observe in corpus is not merely the collocation of words or phrases, but also the cultural norms of a certain language. Chinese is a very good example of how cultural norms influence a certain language in use. Chinese, for instance, is used by Chinese-speakers around the world. The Chinese used in Taiwan may not be completely the same as the Chinese used in China or Singapore, as the language used in these three different countries are formed by the culture specific to that region: China is a country where a certain kinds of ideology might play as the priority of language use, while Singapore is a country with stronger influence of English as English is one of its major official languages which may in return influence the use of Chinese. In this case, if we ignore the influence of culture on language, and view a language as a pure entity that can be translated without any consideration of how it is used under different cultural norms, I would be doubtful about this kind of ‘translation’, as what it brings out is only a facial ‘correspondence’ between language structures rather than the underlying value hidden in every language. Therefore, I think corpus study is not only helpful in providing abundant materials to translators but, more importantly, addresses the relationship between language and culture norms to them.
